Together, we sent a message to Donald Trump, says Gerry Connolly

By Rep. Gerry Connolly:

When I first ran for office here in Fairfax County in 1995, it was a Republican place. Democrats could and did win elections, but the default was Republican. Today, there are just four remaining Republicans representing any part of Fairfax County — Clerk of Court John Frey, Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity, Vice President Mike Pence, and President Donald Trump.

I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this year’s elections in the 11th District. The credit goes to the thousands of Democratic volunteers who knocked doors, made phone calls, wrote postcards, and more in support of our amazing candidates. For my part, I was proud to:

  • Attend 53 events supporting 38 individual candidates
  • Directly contribute nearly $130,000 to support those candidates
  • Raise nearly $230,000 on their behalf

Building the Democratic Party election by election is part of my life’s work and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.

In Fairfax, we consolidated Democratic control of the School Board, won a long-held Republican seat on the Board of Supervisors, and defeated the lone remaining Fairfax Republican in the General Assembly! In Prince William County, we defended all of our competitive delegate seats and elected a diverse, Democratic majority on the Board of Supervisors!

Over the course of those 53 events, I could feel the energy. What I heard everywhere I went — from Reston to Dumfries — was the need to send a message to Donald Trump. A message that his reckless policies and disregard for our Constitution don’t reflect Virginia values. I’m so proud of our community for sending that message loud and clear.

Gerry Connolly is the member of the US House of Representatives for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District
