Dems sign up Indian-Americans for Election Alerts at Republic Day event

Democratic volunteers signed up more than 30 Asian-Americans to receive Election Alerts at the recent India Republic Day celebration at McLean High School, attended by Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) as guest of honor.

Election Alerts are emails from Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) sent to subscribers near election dates with updated voting info — deadlines, how to register to vote or change your address, verify your polling place and voting districts, see what’s on your ballot, early voting times and locations for all counties in Northern Va., and more. The event on Feb. 2 celebrated the 71st anniversary of India’s adoption of its constitution and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. Jay Bhandari of Providence District Democratic Committee (PDCC) did much of the work organizing the event on behalf of National Capital Area Indian Associations.

The Sunday afternoon event featured over 100 children and adults who performed a cultural program coordinated and choreographed by Nilma Mehra, producer and hostess of Indian-oriented local Global Television Network programs.

In his remarks, Sen. Warner, who is co-chair of the Senate Indian-Caucus, recalled his love of India, having been among the first state governors to lead a trade mission there, and committed to helping Indian H-1B visa holders keep their children in the country as they grow older. India’s U.S. Charge d’Affairs, Amit Kumar, thanked Sen. Warner for his support.

At the event, PDCC’s Co-Vice-Chair of Outreach Ajay Gupta, teamed up with FCDC’s Voter Registration & Education Committee members Todd Thurwachter and Deborah Charms to sign up Election Alert subscribers.

Volunteers seeking more information on this service, and signup sheets to use at polling places on “super Tuesday” primary elections, on March 3 should contact VR&EC’s Chair, Janice Yohai (jayohai@cox.net).
